Board or Committee Member
NAMI Kansas’ Board of Directors are elected by NAMI Kansas Board members and the general membership to provide strategic guidance in the fulfillment of NAMI Kansas’ mission to improve the quality of all life for those affected by mental illness. Board members have a broad responsibility to govern the organization. Together, and with input from all members, they determine NAMI Kansas’ official position on matters of public policy, set the budget, ensure that adequate funding is in place and develop strategic plans to guide organizational development. There are also opportunities for non-Board members to serve on several Board Committees.
Legislative District Advocate for the Grassroots Network
Keep tabs on legislative issues related to mental illness and contact legislators (via email, postal mail or in-person) to inform them on mental health issues. Occasionally may be asked to provide testimony about the needs of individuals and families. Join us for Mental Health Advocacy at the Capital activities.
If you are interested in knowing more about these opportunities, contact the state office. Each position of responsibility requires travel 1-2 times per month (local &/or statewide). Term is a minimum of one year.
NAMIWalks Kansas Volunteer
NAMIWalks Kansas Event Day Volunteer
Once a year, hundreds of participants join together to combat stigma and fundraise for NAMI Kansas during our annual NAMI Walks event. Over 50 volunteers are needed on WALK day to assist with event set-up, clean-up, activities, and logistics. Volunteers are needed to work one or more shifts (2-8 hours) during the event. Groups, individuals, and families are welcome!!! Strong bodies are especially needed to help haul event materials throughout the route and early risers are always appreciated for the morning shifts.
This upcoming year’s walk is set for Saturday, October 10, 2020 at the West Ridge Mall in Topeka, Kansas.

NAMIWalks Kansas Committee Member
Join the leadership team for one of the largest anti-stigma events in the state and ensure ongoing funding for NAMI Kansas’ programs. NAMIWalks Committee Members help prepare for, organize, and execute the huge undertaking that is NAMIWalks – from the Kick-Off Luncheon through the Post-Walk Party. Duties include attending monthly committee planning meetings, soliciting donations, distributing publicity material, recruiting walkers and forming teams, and participating as a lead volunteer on-site during the NAMIWalks events. Each committee members is also expected to perform tasks independently between committee meetings. Volunteers should be comfortable approaching personal, business and community contacts as well as asking for donations. Volunteers should be willing to commit 5-ish hours of hours of service a month and participate as a lead volunteer on WALK Day.

Annual State Conference Volunteer
NAMI Kansas hosts an Annual State Conference in October. It’s conducted at a different location each year. The convention generally is half a day on Friday and a full day on Saturday.
The agenda for Friday: registration starting at 3:00 pm, 6:00 pm dinner with presentation from 7:00 – 8:30 pm.
The agenda for Saturday: registration starting at 8:00 am, opening morning session with featured speaker; morning workshops, sit-down plated lunch with panel discussion, afternoon workshops, closing session with featured speaker.
Volunteers assist with: unloading convention materials and set-up of registration and the NAMI information and NAMIWalks awards tables; check-in and registering of attendees; directing vendors to the exhibit areas; placing materials out for the morning program; directing attendees to workshop locations; assisting with member voting of Board of Directors; and packing up of any items that need to return to the office at the end of the event. Volunteers attend the event and are provided lunch with the attendees at no cost. Virtually all volunteers may attend the workshops.
Special Events Volunteers
Event volunteers assist with pre-event activities, which may include making copies, verifying scheduling, assembling event day packets/folders as well as on the event day for set-up, greeters, guest assistance, registration or clean up. Event day volunteers will typically be asked to commit at least 4 hours. Events may include, Mental Health Advocacy Day at the Capital, NAMIWalks Kick-off luncheon, NAMIWalks Event, CIT Summit and Annual State Conference.
Help with NAMI informational tables at local community events. Will directly interact with public to share information about NAMI. Help with setting-up the event; checking-in of attendees; directing attendees to the event, placing materials out for attendees; staffing the table and packing up materials to return to the office at the end of the event.
Assist staff with clerical duties such as, bulk mailings, copying, database management/data entry, inventorying educational materials, assembling course binders, filing, good computer skills a plus. Other projects as they develop. Virtual projects are available.
