WHEN: Saturday, May 12th – 10 a.m. until 1 p.m.

May 9, 2018 (Topeka, KS) – The National Alliance on Mental Illness Kansas (NAMI Kansas) will kick off its 15th annual NAMIWalks event at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 12th at Hummer Sports Park.  More than 300 Walkers from around the state will gather at the site beginning at 10 a.m. for entertainment and to hear speakers address key message for this year’s Walkers.

Wizard of Oz characters including Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, Glenda the Good Witch and the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz will all be on hand to visit with participants and the MAKIN’ MOVES team will get everyone ready with their warm-up routine.  Walkers will have an opportunity to capture the moment in the Forever Photo booth and enjoy a picnic lunch sponsored by NAMI Topeka.

The NAMI Walk was established to demonstrate support for individuals living with mental illness, to raise awareness about mental illness and the need to provide resources for treatment, and to raise funds in support of NAMI’s work at the state and local levels.  The NAMI Kansas Walk is one of more than 80 NAMI Walks taking place around the country in 2018.

NAMI Kansas is the state organization of the National Alliance on Mental Illness, which provides peer support, signature education programs, and advocacy for individuals with mental illness and their family members along with education for the general public about mental illness, the path to recovery, and the opportunities to improve treatment systems.  NAMI Kansas has local affiliates and support groups in 14 communities across the state.

This year’s lead sponsors for the NAMI Walk include:  Stormont-Vail Healthcare, Buckley Industries, Johnson County Mental Health and Alkermes.  Dr. Crystal Duclos and Dr. Richard Maxfield and 29 additional sponsors have also generously contributed to this year’s event!
